So, What is Professional Coaching anyway?
I am an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Throughout my certification training and since, as I expand my reaches as a coach, I have come to embrace the following definition of coaching:
The ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching honors the client as the expert in his/her life and work and believes that every client is creative, resourceful, and whole. Standing on this foundation, the coach’s responsibility is to:
- Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve;
- Encourage client self-discovery;
- Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies; and
- Hold the client responsible and accountable.
Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach’s job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.
What is CoachingthruArt?
“Each of us is an artist, capable of conceiving and creating a vision from the depths of our being.” Dorothy Fadiman, Film Maker/Founder: Concentric Media
CoachingthruArt offers a fun, lively and supportive pathway to assist you move toward a more fulfilling life by combining Coaching and Art. The responsibilities of modern day life have people focusing on work, family, and household responsibilities. There is little time to play with creative projects. Perhaps you loved art as a child and somewhere along the way someone told you that you had no talent. Or, in my case, the message was that art was “Mickey Mouse” and wasn’t anything to be taken too seriously.
Throughout our lives we’ve learned behaviors and beliefs in order to fit into our birth culture thus we can lose touch with the natural gifts that make us unique. Who is that true self we left buried in the rubble of appropriate responses, false smiles, self-criticism and doubt? How can we make the changes needed to live more authentic and fulfilled lives?
Through the venue of fun and thought-provoking CreateDates, you are able to utilize art as a means to explore the creative right side of your brain. That wonderful part of our brain we often don’t make time to play with. When you combine the right and the left more analytical side of your brain, you generate a more integrated and well-balanced brain.
How Coaching supports your brain to change? Or Your Brain on Coaching:
Ursula Pottinga, CPCC, PCC, BEabove Leadership, has done research in the connection between neuroscience, coaching and consciousness, says:
- Coaching helps create positive new neural pathways, which leads to lasting, sustainable change.
- Coaching and being “coach-like” tends to put people in a state where their brains are more open to learning, visioning, and growth.
- The tools of professional coaching have been scientifically proven to reduce stress, which leads to more sophisticated thinking, emotional intelligence, empathy and creativity.
- Coaching helps build crucial connections between various parts of the brain. A more well-integrated brain is correlated with more success in leadership and life.
When you drive your car in the snow over and over along a stretch of road, the tracks become deeper and eventually it becomes the one path the car naturally and easily takes. When you redirect your thinking and then your actions over and over to create a new and better way of being, that is your Brain on Coaching.
How does Art support my journey to a more fulfilling life?
Consider this statement by Cathy A. Malchiodi, ATR, LPCC:
“Part of the transformational power of art is that it allows us to lose ourselves in the activity and to express previously unrealized aspects of ourselves. Trusting our intuition in making marks on paper, creating shapes in paint, or choosing colored paper for collage helps us discover new insights. Working intuitively, making art purely for the joy of creating, and making something with our own hands can also be liberating.”
My intention with CoachingthruArt is to provide an opportunity for you to play with art in an environment that supports you in discovering your unique self.
Through fun and lively guided CreateDates, you can leave the stresses of the day at the door and step into a world of play, connection with others and self-discovery.
