Renée Louise Taylor, ACC
A Seattle native and local artist specializing in mask making, Renée has expressed herself by way of the arts throughout her life.
She pursued her interests by attending Seattle Central College and earning an AA Degree with an emphasis on drawing and design. She continued on to Western Washington University where she received a BA in Art Education. In support of her degree, she spent a summer in Europe touring galleries and studying art history, sculpture, and painting. As she continues to explore new ways to grow artistically, she creates opportunities to coach others to discover their true selves.
“My creative focus has been making masks by utilizing a variety of materials and forms that stretch me as an artist. The muse that moves me to create these masks comes from the strong emotions experienced as part of the twists and turns of life and the urge to manifest them. Each mask challenges me to use unexpected materials, experimenting with variations on my beaded style to express and explore those emotions. The masks contain personal items, broken jewelry, mementos, found objects that create a sort of visual journal of my life.
Initially, I was inspired to make masks after returning from travels in Southeast Asia. I was recognizing and becoming more interested in how cultures use masks to teach, tell stories, decorate, entertain and amuse.
There have been many more travels, masks and life experiences since then that continue to inspire and challenge me as an artist. How exciting it is to put on a mask and become someone or something other than yourself! It is a magical and extremely powerful form of self-expression.”
